THE 500th ANNIVERSARY OF THE REFORMATION!We celebrated Reformation Sunday every October, but we were happy to recently celebrate the 500th Anniversary with a series of celebrations through the anniversary year. We are reminded of the 95 Theses that Martin Luther nailed to the door of the Wittenberg Castle Church to begin the process of reform and renewal. The document spelled out the supporting ideas for the two main beliefs underlying Protestant religions, and particularly the Lutheran Church. These two beliefs, central to our religion, are that the Bible is God’s given authoritative Word and that humans receive salvation through faith alone in Christ alone and not by their deeds. It was a day that shaped religious and cultural history.
"HERE I STAND SUNDAY" - held on April 18, 2021On April 18, 1521, three and a half years after he nailed the 95 Theses to the church door in Wittenberg, Martin Luther made his historic stand at the Diet (official meeting) in the German city of Worms (pronounced “Vorms”). Accused of fostering heresy, he was directed by Charles V and other leaders to recant his teaching about the pure Gospel or face death.
As recounted in his collected works, Luther concluded his statement to the Diet with the words: “Since then your serene majesty and your lordships seek a simple answer, I will give it in this manner, neither horned nor toothed: Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (for I do not trust either in the pope or in councils alone, since it is well known that they have often erred and contradicted themselves), I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. “I cannot do otherwise, here I stand, may God help me, Amen” (LW 32:112–13). On April 18, 2021, the Synod will commemorate the 500th anniversary of Luther’s defiant defense of the pure Gospel by observing “Here I Stand” Sunday, as called for by the adoption of Resolution 4–09 at the 2019 Synod convention. The resolution reads, in part: “WHEREAS, Scripture gives us encouragement with these words: ‘Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful’ (Heb. 10:23) … therefore be it Resolved, That April 18, 2021, be declared ‘Here I Stand’ Sunday throughout The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, its districts, circuits, and congregations … and be it finally Resolved, That our churches and people be encouraged to spend time in prayer, asking the Lord to continue to bless the proclamation of the Gospel.” To learn more information about the history of the Reformation, go to: lutheranreformation.org Our prior VBS virtual program is available ONLINE:
![]() Every year in December our congregation comes together after church to put together care packages for the college students from our church community and for children in the foster care system in our area. Thanks to all who baked cookies and donated items to pack in the boxes that were sent to each of the students again this December - the kids loved it!
IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM PASTOR BILL:
August 3rd, 2022 My dear family and friends of St. Luke’s. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Ed Ulrich was called to his heavenly rest last night. Ed was such a wonderful friend to me and to all at St. Luke. I am especially grieving for Santa as she is going through all of what needs to be done during such a difficult time. This all took place while they were away from home at their cabin in the woods so many hours away from here. I know that only complicates things for Santa and the family. Please keep Santa and the Ulrich family in your prayers. I will forward the details of what is to come as I learn them. In the meantime, we pray that the Lord of all comfort would be with Santa and the family during this most difficult time. Pastor Bill Vangor “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die" |
